Madrid, 26 January 2021 – Patatas Meléndez, the leading company in the fresh potato sector in Valladolid, has signed an annual collaboration agreement with the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL), the network of 54 Food Banks throughout Spain.
As a result of the agreement, Patatas Meléndez becomes a Collaborating Entity of FESBAL and in this way both entities will work to mitigate as far as possible the effects of marginalisation and poverty.
Patatas Meléndez, through the agreement, undertakes to offer its product, fresh potatoes, to the Food Banks belonging to FESBAL that are interested. The agreement is launched with an initial donation of 100,000 kg of potatoes. Ten Food Banks in six Autonomous Communities have received this donation: Álava, Ávila, Burgos, Granada, Huelva, León, Lugo, Murcia, Seville and Valencia.
By means of this agreement, Patatas Meléndez undertakes to ensure that the potatoes reach their destination in optimum quality conditions, preserving all their organoleptic qualities with exceptional nutritional properties.
This agreement signed with the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL) is part of Meléndez’s Corporate Social Responsibility area and its commitment to solidarity, which consolidates its action and donation plan. A plan that in 2020 has led them to donate more than 480,000 kg of fresh potatoes to various entities, including Food Banks.
It is in the Valladolid company’s DNA to make basic foodstuffs available to those who need them most. To achieve this, as well as making every effort to guarantee supply to consumers through the distribution chain, it implements an intense donation plan for those who cannot access food through this channel.
This agreement also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations in the 2030 Agenda and, more specifically, in SDG 2, ‘Zero Hunger’.
Javier Meléndez, CEO of Patatas Meléndez, has stated that “Since our origins at Patatas Meléndez we have been committed to society. A commitment that we have increased at the beginning of the pandemic. That is why this agreement with the Spanish Federation of Food Banks has arisen. A group that, through the selfless work of thousands of volunteers, makes it possible for the most vulnerable people not to lack basic necessities. We are confident that the potatoes we are working on with great care will improve the daily lives of those who receive them”.
For his part, Miguel Fernández, General Manager of FESBAL, comments that “from the Spanish Federation of Food Banks we are especially grateful that companies such as Patatas Meléndez, join in with solidarity initiatives to collaborate with the Food Banks to the extent of their possibilities, because only together, with everyone’s commitment, will we manage to successfully overcome the current situation”.
