SDG Agenda 2030
At Patatas Meléndez we have aligned our strategy with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, adopting a firm commitment to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
SDG1: End poverty
Annual financial contribution to the GAVI Alliance Foundation of la Caixa for projects focused on saving children’s lives and protecting public health by increasing access to vaccination in the poorest countries.
What is Sustainable Development Goal 1: End Poverty?
SDG 1 aims to end poverty in all its forms worldwide. Its targets include ensuring that all people, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, access to basic services, ownership and control over land, natural resources and new technologies.
SDG3: Health and Well-being
Project to promote healthy habits as a way of life focused on potatoes. Collaboration with entities such as the Five a Day Association, which encourages the consumption of fruits and vegetables. We are sponsors, we deal with their Scientific Committee regarding the nutritional aspects of our products, and our meshes carry their seal. In addition, we develop a collaboration with Martin Berasategui as a gastronomic advisor to highlight the main benefits of potatoes and their incorporation as a versatile and healthy dish.
Project to promote healthy habits as a way of life focused on sports. We promote sports practices as a healthy lifestyle habit, leading to our commitment to sports sponsorships. Thus, we sponsor the rugby teams VRAC and La Villa, as well as the Valencia Marathon.
Health and well-being of employees through the inclusion of physical exercise in the workplace with a directed external service.
Our innovations in launching new products are always aimed at making our customers’ lives easier.
What is Sustainable Development Goal 3: Health and Well-being?
The SDG 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, thus ensuring sustainable development. Its goals include reducing the global maternal mortality rate and ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under five years old. It seeks to end epidemics and both communicable and non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment.
SDG5: Gender equality
We have approved and implemented our Equality Plan.
We contribute to the social and economic cohesion of the rural environment, creating jobs for young people and women, in a context greatly affected by population aging and masculinization. The average age of Patatas Meléndez workers is 38 years, and 37.4% of the employment is female.
What is Sustainable Development Goal 5: Health and Well-being?
Gender equality is a fundamental human right and, in addition, it is one of the essential foundations for building a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world, as stated by the United Nations.
Over the past few decades, some progress has been made, such as the gradual schooling of more girls, which has an effect in reducing the number of girls forced into early marriage, and the presence of more women in parliamentary positions or executive roles. In this sense, laws are being reformed to promote gender equality. Despite all this, there are still challenges and data indicating that there is still a long way to go. For example, according to United Nations data, women continue to be underrepresented at all levels of political leadership, and one in five women and girls aged between 15 and 49 years reports having suffered sexual or physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner over a 12-month period.
SDG6: Clean water and sanitation
We calculate the water footprint and have defined an action plan for its reduction.
What is Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation?
The SDG 6 aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. To achieve this, measures are considered such as universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water by 2030, reducing pollution and discharge to improve water quality, or minimizing the release of chemicals and reducing the percentage of untreated wastewater.
SDG7: Affordable and Clean Energy
We use hybrid company vehicles.
We have installed 1,350 solar panels of 410 Wp on 5,000 square meters of roofing.
Conducted study for the use of 100% green-origin electric energy.
Replacement of current lighting systems with LED lighting.
See AXPO Certificate that guarantees the 100% renewable origin of our energy.
What is Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy?
The SDG 7 aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. To achieve this, it is necessary to double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, as well as to increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the energy mix.
SDG8: Decent work and economic growth
Creation of support lines for workers for social needs.
Channels for participation and communication with employees through the recognition of their improvement ideas.
Development of performance evaluation policy for workers.
Achievement of the GRASP Certification from Global GAP for the farmers who work with us.
Employability in the area: 95% of our workforce lives in rural areas.
We create stable and quality jobs: 70% of our staff has permanent contracts.
Internal promotion, identifying and motivating workers to professionally advance at Patatas Meléndez.
Continuous training, both in technical skills for performing the activity and especially in the area of quality.

We collaborate with various educational schools in technical specialties by developing internship programs with them in the areas of Maintenance and Production.
We have a collaboration agreement with Innova IT Business School so that their students from the ‘Master Agro 4.0 in collaboration with John Deere’ and others included in the Tecrural Campus can access job and/or internship offers.
What is Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth?
SDG9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Incorporation of 4.0 technologies in our field, for our processes and new developments.
What is Sustainable Development Goal 9: Decent work and economic growth?
The SDG 9 refers to the need to build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation. For this purpose, it seeks to have the industry contribute more significantly to employment and GDP, doubling that contribution in the least developed countries, as well as increasing scientific research and upgrading infrastructure.
